To be SEEN is to have support - and for me, support means having a found family.

I’m Ronnie McKinney. I’m the blonde one… no, the other blonde one. I’m pansexual and constantly navigating my gender identity. I recently had my titties reduced to help with back pain, but it ended up easing so much of my gender dysphoria too. For my piece, I wanted to include part of my found family - my partner and a few of my close friends.

I kissed my first girl in third grade, but didn’t come out to my parents until I was 17. Gillian - the other blonde pansexual - had their first girl kiss in high school, came out to friends at 21, but didn’t come out to family until 29. We both come from deeply religious backgrounds, and choosing to live authentically, even when others don’t understand, has been beautifully freeing.

Martin, my husband, is a straight man, but his “type” has always been queer. Josh is straight as well, and married to a nonbinary human. Both Martin and Josh are men of color in a world that can feel frightening. We find ourselves asking questions like: Is it safe to travel in the U.S. right now? and even, Should we just move to Spain?

So, to summarize: two straight men married to two pansexual humans - one confidently nonbinary and one still figuring it out. In our family, someone is always worried someone else could be targeted, yet we do our best to live a life filled with love and laughter. And there’s plenty of laughter - especially when people confuse me and Gillian, sometimes even our own partners.

Between us, we have three engineers and one human who works in ABA supporting neurodivergent children. Our personalities overlap in the funniest ways, but it’s our differences that make my found family so beautiful - and why I wanted us to be SEEN.

From video game nights, to cosplaying with Josh, to Gillian helping Martin learn piano, to letting our neurodivergent brains run wild - I hope you not only SEE us in this art, but also everything underneath it. We hope every human, regardless of orientation, labels, or special interests, is inspired to live authentically. Because when you live life for you, that’s when you have the chance to be truly SEEN.
